During his studies of physics at Heidelberg University, Eckerlin quickly became fascinated by the particle physics experiments at the PETRA accelerator at DESY and the SppS at CERN. The discovery of the weak bosons and the search for the top quark, both predicted by the standard model at that time, were the driving force for him to participate, in the following years, in the analysis, operation and construction of the HEP experiments JADE, OPAL, H1 and finally CMS. Eckerlin's main focus is on detector construction, commissioning and operation, like the JADE FADC readout, the H1 tracker readout system, the H1 detector control system, the trigger-less readout proposal for the future ILC detectors, and recently the upgrade of silicon based tracking systems at CMS.
