Large Aperture Test Magnets

There are two large magnets for prototype test installed at the DESY II test beam. In area T21, there is a large 1.35 T dipole magnet and, in area T24/1, a superconducting 1 T solenoid.

Big Red Magnet – MD Dipole

In area T21, there is a large window dipole magnet (DESY type MD) installed. It has an integrated length of about 1 m and an opening,
which is about 1.50 m wide and 0.35 m high. The maximum field is 1.35 T in the middle of the field volume.

PCMAG – Superconducting Solenoid

In area T24/1, a large-bore superconducting solenoid is available. Its aperature measures about 0.85 m in diameter and 1.0 m in length. It can be operated up to a magentic field of 1 T and has been designed without a return yoke to be very lightweight. The wall has a radiation lenght of 0.2 X0.

A support structure is build inside, so that detectors can be mounted on two rails and be moved along the magentic field axis. The magnet is mounted in a remote controlled movable stage which can move horizontally and vertically perpendicular to the beam axis and rotate up to ±45 in the horizontal plane.
