DESY operates a test beam facility with three test beam lines (21, 22 and 24) in experimental Hall 2 (building 27) on the campus in Hamburg Bahrenfeld. The electron or positron beams are converted bremsstrahlung beams from carbon fibre targets in the electron-positron synchrotron DESY II with up to 1000 particles per cm² and energies from 1 to 6 GeV, an energy spread of ~5% and a divergence of ~1mrad.

More detailed information on:

Ralf Diener (FTX-TBT), Norbert Meyners (MEA1) and Marcel Stanitzki (FTX-TBT) are in charge of coordination of the DESY Test Beam. Beam time can be requested via our registration system (new accounts can be requested via email to us), but please first have alook at our rules. The application should be entered by the group leader who actually is organizing the beam time and will be on-site during the beam time.

Be aware that the German and DESY regulation forces all participants to attend a briefing about general, special and radiation safety before you can start to work at the Test Beam (each Monday at 13.00). To document the compliance with these requirements, all users will be invited to register in our system. In invitation is sent to the group leader in time before the beam time starts.

This registration is also nessesary to issue a valid access card to work in the test beam areas secured by the access control system DACHS (DESY Access Handling System).  Short after the registration, the DACHS card can be obtained at DESY, in bldg. 6/ R110 (Mon-Thu 8:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:00, Fri 8:00-12:00 and 13:00-14:00).

For visiting the facility or organizing a tour please follow the visiting rules.

Publications

The General Acknowledgement

The following note is expected to appear in the acknowledgements of publications based in total or in part on measurements at the DESY II Test Beam Facility:

"The measurements leading to these results have been performed at the Test Beam Facility at DESY Hamburg (Germany), a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF)".

A similar acknowledgement should be included in conference presentations, proceedings and any other public presentation of your results.

Test Beam Reference

As reference for the DESY II Test Beam Facility the following publication should be used:

”The DESY II test beam facility”  ( https://doi.org/10.1016/j.nima.2018.11.133 )
NIMA, Volume 922, 1 April 2019, Pages 265-28

Referencing this in your publication helps us very much to track publications that are related to the DESY II Test Beam Facility.

Open Access

In accordance with the Berlin Declaration on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, signed by all German research organizations, the Helmholtz Association among them, the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron supports the open access movement.
Therefore, we encourage our users to publish their scientific results, that are based in total or in part on data taken at the DESY II Test Beam Facility, in open access journals.
