After seven successful editions, the "Beamline for Schools" physics competition will be back in 2021. Registration is now open, meaning teams can now register with a team name, country and coach to receive updates by email. The deadline for submitting the research proposals is 15 April. "Beamline for Schools" offers students a unique opportunity to conduct a physics experiment at a real research laboratory. The competition is organised by the research centre CERN and held at DESY in Hamburg. More than 11,000 students have already taken part in the competition over the past years.

Teams consisting of at least five students aged 16 and over and at least one adult coach can apply for "Beamline for Schools" 2021. The application consists of a short written application and a one-minute video in which you present the experiment you would like to carry out at the beamline. There are contact persons in each country who will be happy to give you tips and advice and check your ideas in advance.

The applications are then reviewed by scientists from CERN and DESY, and each year, two teams are selected by a committee of experts. These two teams will be given the opportunity to carry out their experiments at a research centre. Since the CERN test beam facility will be under scheduled maintenance in 2021, the experiments will again be conducted at DESY in Hamburg. It offers particle beams and infrastructure that enable a wide range of experiments in particle physics, detector development and multidisciplinary science.

This is how you take part:

     December 2020 - registrations open

Register your team name, country and coach contact information to receive email updates. Don't worry, no proposal idea is expected yet.

     15 April 2021 - submission deadline

Submit your written application and video in English by midnight CET.

June 2021 - announcement of the winners

CERN and DESY will announce the winners, who will then travel to DESY (depending on the pandemic situation) to carry out their experiment. The 20-30 shortlisted teams will also be announced.

September/October 2021 - running the experiments at DESY

The exact dates will be announced according to the accelerator plan and in consultation with the winners.
