From space travel to sign language: science takes over Hamburg's pubs for an evening

Next round of “Science on Tap” on June 12, 2025 at 8 p.m.

Are we bathing in dark matter? How do you uncover 5000-year-old letter secrets? Is climate protection a private commitment or a national goal? And does the language I use influence my identity? At this year's “Science on Tap”, researchers from the University of Hamburg and the DESY research center will once again provide answers to exciting and topical questions.

In around 50 pubs and bars, the scientists will report on their current projects in an entertaining way and immerse themselves in the world of science with the public - far away from laboratories, lecture halls and experimental halls. Guests can expect a varied program with presentations from different areas of research: From the enforcement strategies of parasites and space travel to mini-accelerators and the danger posed by black holes. Visitors will also find out, for example, whether sign languages are languages without borders and whether Hamburg will be the tree capital of the future.

All of the lectures underline the basic idea behind the “'Science on Tap” event series: people - regardless of their prior knowledge and in a relaxed atmosphere - are given the latest findings from research, and there is also room for exchange and discussion.

Since the first edition in 2015, DESY and the University of Hamburg have jointly organized “Wissen vom Fass”. They are supported by the Clusters of Excellence “CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter” and “Quantum Universe” as well as PIER PLUS, the concerted strategic partnership of Hamburg universities and non-university research institutes. “Science on Tap” is also funded by the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments.
