"Every day men commit violence against women and girls. In Germany alone, each third day a woman dies as a result of violence by her partner or ex-partner. DESY's success is based on respectful and appreciative interaction with each other. This is why we say NO to violence against women and girls and are setting an example. Orange your city - so that nobody can turn a blind eye any more."

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25 November, DESY is setting an example against violence against women. Orange is the signal colour for this campaign called "Orange your city / orange your world", so orange is also the colour of the day at DESY.

"DESY makes an important contribution to the development of society and stands for socially engaged research, especially since we launched the DESY Dialogue Offensive in 2019," says Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors. "Pointing out and counteracting social injustice is part of the mission. Therefore, DESY is setting an example against violence against girls and women and is participating in the worldwide campaign day."

The "International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women", a day of action proclaimed by the UN, is the start of a more than two-week campaign against gender-specific violence. The facts are shocking: one in three women worldwide has experienced physical or sexual violence, mostly at the hands of a partner. Every day around the world, 137 women are killed by a family member.

Nevertheless, far fewer than half of the women who have experienced violence seek help, mostly out of fear of reprimand from their family environment. In Germany, too, the police record one attempted killing of a woman every day. Every third day a woman dies here at the hands of her partner or ex-partner.
