Research for everyone: DESY opens the doors to the future on June 1. As part of the "Science City Day", the research center invites you (finally again after seven years) to a big open day on the campus in Bahrenfeld. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., DESY will open its huge experimental halls and present science up close, understandable and hands-on. With more than 100 events, activities and lectures.
What are quantum leaps? How do electrons keep going in a circular accelerator? And how can you read 4000-year-old sealed cuneiform tablets without opening them? On Science City Day, DESY scientists will provide fascinating insights into the world of particle accelerators, research with ultra-bright X-ray light, particle and astroparticle physics and scientific computing. What sounds so dry and theoretical can be understood and experienced on Science City Day. Even for children and those who dropped out of physics after the 10th grade.
"Our research is as fascinating as it is socially relevant for the future," says DESY Director Helmut Dosch. "Everyone who works at DESY at our world-class facilities or is involved in our research knows this. On Science City Day, however, we also want to reach and inspire those who have not yet dared to visit our campus." He continues: "It is extremely important for us to break down inhibitions and possible skepticism and make our diverse science accessible to everyone. That's why we are also looking forward to direct interaction with visitors."
Try it out, touch it, see for yourself: On Science City Day, DESY offers insights into experimental halls and accelerator tunnels, construction departments and laboratories. And, of course, hands-on experiments: Find out how an X-ray experiment works with boules balls and an angle triangle. Generate X-rays with adhesive tape and create giant chocolate kisses in a vacuum. Find out more about magnetic measurement technology - or how to build a particle detector with a kind of Ikea instruction booklet. And the workshops and DESY fire department also show how varied and important their work on campus is.
DESY is located at the heart of Hamburg's future-oriented Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld project. A new district will be created here by the 2040s, where people will research, work and live. At Science City Day, DESY and its research partners on the campus will be joined by many civil society and district initiatives on the city mile on Albert-Einstein-Ring. Here you can get a preview of Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld.
DESY and its campus partners are looking forward to welcoming all science enthusiasts, curious people and neighbors - and the next generation of researchers - on June 1. Welcome to the DESY world!
