Cutting-edge science in a cozy atmosphere

"Wissen vom Fass (Science on tap)" on May 2 in Hamburg´s pubs

This year, "Wissen vom Fass (Science on tap)" will once again bring researchers from all disciplines to Hamburg's bars and pubs. On May 2, 2024, starting at 8 p.m., curious people will gain insights into the world of science in entertaining lectures - and can get into conversation with the speakers over a drink. DESY and the University of Hamburg will be hosting more than 40 bars this time.

Visitors to the eighth edition of the successful knowledge format can once again expect a colorful and varied program. Far away from laboratories and lecture halls, the researchers will address questions such as: Do we recognize sexual identity by our voice? Can cancer be defeated in a fraction of a second? How do you unravel a 5000-year-old letter secret? Can you detect particles with sand? And how do you trick artificial intelligence with mathematics?

All presentations will take place simultaneously in bars and pubs in and around Hamburg. They start at 8 pm and admission is free. An entertaining short presentation will be followed by a discussion round, during which the audience will have the opportunity to quiz the scientists until the last glass has been emptied. For all international Hamburg residents, some of the lectures will be held in English. What all events have in common is that they make cutting-edge science accessible in a relaxed atmosphere - regardless of the audience's prior knowledge.

"We want to communicate to urban society what and how we work and research. Science on tap is a very good format for opening up to society. It deals with exciting and topical issues such as organ donation, climate change and combating viruses. On this evening, we will show how science and research help us to look at problems and issues and find the best possible solutions for us all. I also see this as our task: We are the university of the city and for the city," says Hauke Heekeren, President of Universität Hamburg.

"Science belongs at the heart of society, and direct exchange with people is extremely important to us, especially in times of increasing skepticism about science. At 'Science on tap', guests in bars and pubs experience how exciting and fascinating our research is and, in particular, what they themselves gain from it," adds Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Directorate.

Since the first edition in 2015, the DESY research center and the University of Hamburg have jointly organized "Wissen vom Fass (Science on tap)". They are supported by the Clusters of Excellence "CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter" and "Quantum Universe" as well as PIER PLUS, the concerted strategic partnership of Hamburg universities and non-university research institutes. "Science on tap" is funded by the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments.
